Car and Driver magazine dubbed the VW Karmann Ghia Convertible as “The Last Speedster Ever Made…” in its August of 1972 publication trumpeting that “the 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is the Speedster re-incarnate. It does nearly everything the original did just as well – and many things it does better.” This is an incredible car that looks great and drives well. Better than original, this 1972 Karmann Ghia Convertible was upgraded with a new engine from VW Brazil in 1992, an aluminum cased VW long block engine with a 69 mm crankshaft re-bored from 85.5 mm cylinders to 90.5 mm cylinders for increased horsepower of 1776CC. This replaced the original stock engine which was a dual port 1600CC VW long block engine with standard 85.5 mm cylinders and a 69 mm crankshaft. Also, dual Kadron 40mm 1-Barrel Carburetors where purchased and installed in June of 1988. Kadron’s are Brazilian built Solex Carbs. They are the largest of the dual 1BBL carburetors and produce the most power. Their linkage is a form of centerpull that is not as good as the crossbar linkage type available for some other carburetor sets, but many believe the overall performance outweighs this issue. The linkages are currently reinforced with plastic cable ties to avoid problems. The odometer lists about 37,300 miles. In addition, this Karmann Ghia Convertible received a new premium German canvas top and headliner in November of 2002, which is currently in excellent condition. It may be interesting to note that there were reportedly only 3,076 Karmann Ghia Convertibles made in the 1972 model year, of which a limited number have survived. This rare Karmann Ghia’s original 1972 body color was Blood Orange with a black interior. Its body color was changed to Guard Red in 1996 which is similar to Karmann Ghia’s original Bahia Red body color offered in 1972.
